Benny Petrus of Stuttgart is known as a traditional good-ole-boy dealmaker- with all the good and bad that this implies. Bond seems to be the more doctrinaire liberal of the two.

The Speaker's position is important because they determine important committee chairmanships, as well as controlling which bill goes to what committee. The importance of that can be illustrated by the story behind the "No Gay Foster Parents" bill sponsored by Bob Adams in the House and Jim Holt in the Senate. The bill was sent to one of the few senate committees where hardcore liberals were in the majority. They would not let it get to the Senate floor, lest it pass overwhelmingly.

The Arkansas Times Warwick Sabin also notes that "Petrus also embodies the free-spending lobbying culture that persists at the State Capitol. He kept a lobbyist-financed hospitality suite during this year’s session where his colleagues could partake of free food and drink and he has assembled numerous dinners, parties and other gatherings to garner votes for speaker."

Some say that Bond has the edge over Petrus for this position, but we will only know for sure after the Jan. 9th secret ballot. Of course, such a result assumes that both men will win re-election.

Pettrus will win with 54 votes and half of them will come from Republicans because he is the conservative in the race.

Will Bond is the top photo BTW.

He looks quite young to be speaker of the house.

Benny is not the conservative in the race. He summed it up publicly by stating that he is a bridgebuilder , in other words do whatever he thinks it takes to make it. Our Representatives should have a position that got them elected in the first place and to then stand behind their principles. I can still hear the echoing voice of Benny in my ear when he laughed and said he had so much money and if needed can get more to kick anyones Butt. Greed and special interests lobbying are one of the things wrong in all of Government. I wont ask nor take a cent from anyone that will expect a favor. This Just aint right.
The other thing, If Petrus wins speaker of the house it will be a short termed appointment since He wont be State Representative after November.

Harvey, I didn't say he was a conservative - I said he was the conservative in that race against Bond - which isn't hard to be when compared to Will Bond - one of the most left wing liberal legislators in the House.

The accurate count is 49-44 with 7 votes out. Sounds like someone has to get 7 votes to win...wonder who?

Benny Petrus is a bridgebuilder, that's true. In this case, he's building a bridge that will allow knuckle-dragging simpletons and village idiots like Harvey Edwards more access to an already-crippled legislative process. Will Bond is a smart, moderate guy who will not be easily influenced by the jesus freaks. Benny is -- and don't take this the wrong way-- a delta dumbass. Not that we haven't had dumbasses as House Speaker (Bill Stovall, for instance), but I'd prefer to try someone who doesn't believe dinosaurs drowned in Noah's flood.

Thank you Mr. Daddy,

Your assessemnt that Mr. Bonds will not easily influenced by people you deride as "jesus freaks" is all the evidence I need- to support Petrus!

If more people were influenced by Jesus and those who love Him, we would have a better world.

I have been following a site now for almost 2 years and I have found it to be both reliable and profitable. They post daily and their stock trades have been beating
the indexes easily.

Take a look at Wallstreetwinnersonline.com
