Say Anything to Scare Them in Roger's Mayor's Race

Do those liberal consultants from the leftist Markham Group that are running the Greg Hines for Mayor of Rogers campaign just sit around a table and think up lies they can tell to scare Rogers residents into voting against Kurt Maddox?

The latest attack ad claims that Maddox does not support the Rogers Adult Wellness Center. Maddox has visited that place every week for quite a while and I've never heard him say anything bad about it, nor has his campaign manager Patrick Hall. Here is an e-mail Hall sent both Hines and the media (as if they would cover it!).

Mr. Tull / Mr. Hines:

When I heard your campaign's new radio ad (audio file attached) which
claims "[Maddox] talks about raising city fees and has not supported
our Adult Wellness Center", I began digging through emails, notes,
campaign literature and then thoroughly quizzed Mr. Maddox in search
for the facts to substantiate these claims. Everything I have turned
up unequivocally refutes these claims and, in fact, seems to clearly
establish the polar opposite. If I have missed something, could you
help refresh my memory? Otherwise, Mr. Maddox and our campaign
committee look forward to a prompt retraction.

Respectfully,
Patrick Hall
Campaign Manager
Maddox for Mayor

I am interested to know what factual basis they think they have to support the claims of the latest attack ad.

Here you go!

Fact #1: He wants control of our city budget . . .but he’s filed for personal bankruptcy in the past.

Gore, John. “Mayoral Candidate Filed Bankruptcy In 1991,” The Northwest Arkansas Morning News, October 9, 2010

Fact #2: He wants to run our city . . . but he’s not from here and has never served the people here.

Since this is a fact, no citation is needed. Has Mr. Maddox ever served in any office in Rogers? No.

Fact #3: He wants your vote . . . but he rarely, if ever, votes himself (in fact he missed 13 elections in the past 10 years)

“Hines lists 17 elections in which Maddox did not cast a vote since 2000. A check of voting records at the Benton County Clerk’s Office confirmed Maddox did not cast ballots in 17 elections, but he did vote in 11 elections during the same time period.”

Gore, John. “MAYORAL RUNOFF ELECTION: Talons Out As Voting Starts” The Northwest Arkansas Morning News Thursday, November 18, 2010.

Fact #4: He talks about raising city fees, and hasn’t supported our Adult Wellness Center.

YOUR QUOTE:

“There are areas in the parks and recreation department that have the potential to recover their cost through a fee system. I believe it is worth investigating..."

Maddox, Kurt. Mayoral Candidates Discuss Parks Future, Northwest Arkansas Morning News November 11, 2010

Additionally, I would like to remind you of your visit to the Adult Wellness Center with candidate Gunner Delay and our new Congressman Steve Womack. In that visit you and Gunner Delay publicly questioned the funding behind the Wellness Center that was partially obtained by Rep. Bledsoe.

“Rogers Mayor Steve Womack said federal grant money could help build regional wellness centers - similar to the Rogers Adult Wellness Center - across the country that would promote a more healthful lifestyle and result in less money being spent on Medicare and health care over time.”

“Kurt Maddox, a Gravette businessman running for the same seat, said he opposes federal spending for wellness centers. Maddox also attended Wednesday's tour.”

Bowden, Bill. “Rivals spar on funding of gyms DeLay, Womack cite federal role,” Arkansas Democrat Gazette March 11, 2010.

Ok, there YOU go. The "Parks and Recreation" department can mean a lot of things. What you need is evidence Maddox wants to cut funding to the Adult Wellness Center. You can't find a quote for that, so you use one that does not apply.

The only quote you have from Maddox says that he is opposed to using FEDERAL funding to build a string of similar centers across the country. Any funding Sen. Bledsoe provided would have to be STATE funding, since she is in the STATE legislature.

The obvious reason Maddox did not want federal funding for a string of centers like this around the country is that the people of Rogers have already built their center. Why should they be taxed to pay for centers around the country when they have already paid for theirs?

The ads are dishonest, as is Greg Hines if he fails to retract them.

BTW, he filed for personal bankruptcy when he was 19 or 20, and paid all of his creditors back. He did not have a rich father to bail him out like Hines did. Not that I object to that, I am glad he got bailed out, I just think its hypocritical of him to use it to attack given the history.

#2 He's lived in the city at least seven years, and has had a business here for 20. The "never served the people here" malarky shows exactly the problem. He HAS served people in Rogers, but he has done it through his business, not through government- but to the liberal Hines mindset that service doesn't count, it's only what you do in government. That's the perspective problem that has so many people worried coming out.
