Group Offers Downloads Challenging High School Textbooks on Evolution

What started as a project to balance the bias two men found in a single section of one school’s textbooks has turned into an organization which offers free downloadable materials to students across the nation at http://www.textbookaccuracy.org.

When Dentist Don Eckard volunteered to be a community representative for an area school, he was surprised at how hard they pushed the idea of molecules-to-man evolution. “The district even had a power-point presentation which clearly was designed to intimidate teachers so that they would not dare teach anything about evolution other than what their texts said.” Eckard recalled, “And the texts, all four of the major texts in use in U.S. public schools, were really one-sided and in some cases misleading in the way they presented the evidence.” He shared his concerns with a friend, Mark Moore, who spent twelve years as a public school science teacher.

“I knew just what he was talking about” said Moore, “I watched the text books change over my career so that they emphasized evolution more, while the quality and depth of the evidence for it was less. Your children are no longer being educated on macro-evolution, they are being indoctrinated. There is a lot of evidence out there that life is the result of Intelligent Design, but that evidence is excluded from the texts.”

In response, the team compiled Word documents which balanced the material in each of the four major biology books used in U.S. schools. They are now available for free download so that any student or teacher could get them. Students just click on the picture of the book they use and download the files, which match up with their book page by page in some cases. Now, other individuals and churches are signed up to help promote the site.

Both Eckard and Moore are quick to say that micro-evolution is well established by science and does occur, but the idea that those same processes are responsible for new types of organisms, which they call macro-evolution, is contradicted by a fair look at the evidence. What is the evidence? “Sometimes the truth is too detailed for a news-bite. Students should go to www.textbookaccuracy.org and find the stuff that goes with their textbook.”
