Facts For the Fight on Illegal Immigration

The following are some additional bulleted facts I put together from research I did as a concerned citizen that I think you should keep in mind in the legislative decisions you are now making on illegal aliens. Some of the material needs to be brought up to date and would probably be worse than related below. Remember how so many kept saying after 9/11 that somebody should have connected the dots?

· The Immigrant population in Arkansas exploded in the 1990’s. In fact, Arkansas experienced the fourth largest percentage increase in immigrants in the US during the 90’s, increasing 19%. 1

· There are at the very minimum 3 thousand illegal immigrants pouring over our borders daily, mostly from the Mexican Border. But according to the latest 2004 reports on estimates, that figure is realistically significantly too low since border patrols have admitted apprehending only 1 out of every 7 to 10. That means the actual numbers are closer to 7,000 per day! 2

· Illegal Resident Population of Arkansas in 2000 was 27,000. 3

· Between 1990 and 2000, Arkansas gained 49,000 immigrants, bringing the total number of foreign born residents in the state to 74,000. That was a near tripling of the immigrant population in Arkansas, much higher than the 12% of the native born.4

· According to Dr. Donald Huddle, cumulative costs for the decade 1997-2006 for all post-1969 immigrants will be $866 billion, an average of almost $87 billion a year.5

· A study by the Center for Immigration Studies, a public policy organization based in Washington, D.C., concluded that, when all taxes are paid and all costs are considered, illegal households cost the federal government a net $10 billion in 2002. And when the federal outlay is combined with that of California, Arizona, Arkansas and other states, the total net cost of illegal immigration is more than $20 billion a year. 6

· This dramatic and rapid population growth has put communities in our state under great strain. For instance in Farmington, which had 173% increase in the 1990’s the State Department of Health, was forced to issue a moratorium on new housing, because residential sewer lines could not keep up.7

· Some of the most violent criminals at large today are illegal aliens. Yet in cities where the crimes these aliens commit are highest, the police cannot use the most obvious tool to apprehend them: their immigration status.

In Los Angeles, for example, dozens of members of a ruthless Salvadoran prison gang have sneaked back into town after having been deported for such crimes as murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and drug trafficking. Police officers know who they are and know that their mere presence in the country is a felony. But if a cop arrests an illegal gang banger for felonious reentry, it is he who will be treated as a criminal, for violating the LAPD’s rule against enforcing immigration law.8

· A documented study published in City Journal in 2004 found that 95 percent of all outstanding murder warrants in Los Angeles involved suspected illegal aliens. And up to two-thirds of all felony warrants were for undocumented illegals.9

· Arkansas authorities requested compensation of $451,000 from the federal government in FY’99 for the incarceration of illegal aliens instate and local jails and prisons (under the federal State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, or SCAAP) but received only $174,000 in compensation, leaving$277,000 in uncompensated costs to be borne by Arkansas taxpayers.10

· Intelligence reports indicate that in July, 2004, 25 Chechen terrorism suspects illegally entered the US from Mexico refocusing attention on the porous border from which many believe the next major attack on Americans could come. “The Chechen group is suspected of having links to Islamist terrorists seeking to separate the southern enclave of Chechnya from Russia” according to intelligence resources.11

· In 1994 the Bureau of Prisons report showed that some 20,171 non citizens were serving time in federal prisons or were awaiting sentencing on federal charges. It found at that time, that t nearly one out of every four inmates was not a US citizen. Another 28,000 non-citizens are in state prisons. (That was in 1994)12

· The number of “criminal” illegal immigrants caught in the Tucson sector more than tripled in fiscal year 2004, the agency said.13

· Fewer Immigrants in Arkansas are becoming naturalized US citizens. In 2000 only 30% were naturalized in Arkansas compared to 49%in 1990.14

· The 2000 population is about 60,000 more persons than the Census Bureau had expected to find in the state in 2000 when it issued its most recent state population projections in 1996. The significance of this is that the Census Bureau has concluded that much of the shortfall in their population estimates during the 1990s was due to an underestimation of the illegal alien population.15

The citizens of Arkansas already sense the dangers in their heart but as they hear more and more about this issue they will become even more upset if the legislators’ decisions don’t help protect them.

Crime stats for Benton county (Northwest Arkansas) for Thursday, March 10, 2005:

Yelany Moncada, 20, pleaded guilty to first degree criminal mischief.

Gary Zulpo, 26, pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter.

Juan Garcia, 24, pleaded guilty to a charge of battery.

Arturo Caro, 18, was arrested on two counts of aggravted robbery, and charges of first degree battery and theft of property.

Beau Cloer, 35, was arrested on charges of fraudulent us of credit card, theft of property, theft of services and parole violation.

Arthur Nation III, 40, was arrested on a charge of second-degree sexual assault.

George Perez, 28, was arrested on a charge of sexual indecency with a child.

I did not omit any names/crimes. Almost EVERY DAY it's the same thing.

Either our law enforcement officials are racists, or there's a certain sub-culture here in NW Arkansas who's constituents aren't very interested in getting along.

The Rogers (just south of Bentonville) police department have an officer placed on leave this week pending an investigation because, enroute to answer a call, his patrol car struck another car carrying two illegals. The driver died while the other fled. I could go on and on...

I had to make an emergency room run this past Friday night. While there I met a lady whose adult daughter was in a car accident in Little Rock. It was a hit and run. The other driver said "I no license. Don't call police" The young lady gave a good discription of the driver, truck and license plate number to the officer on the scence. The lady I spoke to said the police located the truck and the driver. The license plate didn't belong to the truck. The driver is an illegal who not only didn't have a license but, also isn't an insured driver. The lady's daughter and young grandson were hurt in this accident and their car is totaled.

The public isn't hurt by this ??? This family sure is!
