Good News On Two Bills – ERA and HB1525

On House Bill 1525 we won another victory. The vote in our favor was 20 to 13. We had to stay until 6;00 to see it though. That was the bill to give scholarships and instate tuition to college students here in the country illegally which we opposed for a number of reasons, none of them having to do with bigotry or prejudice.

Senator Holt has put a lot of energy into fighting this bill, and even though he didn’t get his bill (SB206)heard yesterday, he won big time on this one. He was instrumental yesterday in getting a chance to discuss the bill. As soon as the sponsor finished introducing the bill, Senator Bryles made a motion for immediate vote. On a voice vote of yes and no, the chair ruled in favor of Bryles, but Holt asked for a roll call; and they were able to speak on it. However, after Senator Denny Altes, the other sponsor, spoke against it and Dave Bisbee spoke against it, for some reason Republican Gilbert Baker again made a motion to close the debate. The chair upheld it and they took a vote. I don’t know why Republican Gilbert Baker wanted to close the debate and not let Holt speak against it. Baker voted against the bill.

However, it turned out in our favor and the vote was 20 against and only 13 for. They tried to get a clincher vote on it which would have kept them from being able to bring it up again but that failed. I hope we have enough margin to sustain it because the sponsor said he would bring it up again. The legislators said they received more e-mails on this HB1525 and Holt’s other bill SB206 than all the other bills put together. Evidently the pressure worked. Just pray and continue to work because they love to sneak things back in and get them passed when people are out of the chamber, etc. E-mails thanking them or being disappointed in their vote would help the situation.

Here is the vote on this one. Two surprises on this vote too. Republican Senator Whitaker voted for it, and Tim Wooldridge voted for it. Senator Whitaker is in the Northwest and I am sure she will get a lot of flack over it.

Good News On ERA amendment resolution. The resolution to adopt the Equal Right Amendment (ERA) failed yesterday in the Senate but barely. They had to have 18 votes for it to pass, and they only had 16. However they had one more vote than our side. The vote was 15 to 16 in favor of the amendment. They put a clincher vote on it so that means it can’t come back up this session. Hallelujah.

However it makes me anxious that we could come that close. The proponents admitted that three states, including Arkansas, have been targeted. Proponents said it had nothing to do with homosexual marriage. My question then is why are all the homosexual websites promoting it with such intensity. We need to keep this information out there the next two years so they can’t get it done next session.

There were a couple of very disappointing and surprising votes on it. Senator Tim Wooldridge, a Church of Christ pastor from Paragould voted for the ERA amendment. We were very surprised at his vote. I think he let his church and fellow pastors down. I don’t know what he was thinking, but he also voted for HB1525. That bill would have provided scholarship tax dollars for illegal aliens. Senator Holt led the effort to fight this bill, where the vote was in our favor 20 nays to 13 yeas.

Here is a list of the votes on the ERA resolution SJR17 by Sue Madison Be sure to see the vote on HB1525 below this one.

Senator Kim Hendren made a beautiful speech opposing ERA on the floor and actually used the name Jesus Christ and talked about Jesus Christ being the liberator of women. He talked about how most people look at only one side of the picture about submission but how Christ gave the command for men to love their wives like Christ did the church – which was to die for it. He talked about how much he loved his wife, daughter and granddaughters. I was really surprised. I have not heard anyone in the legislature be this bold in using this language at the Capitol. He really deserves an e-mail of praise for being that bold and upholding the name of Christ. hendrenk@arkleg.state.ar.us
