Although the announcement was so low key as to slip below most radar screens, it seems that Fort Smith resident and former legislator Gunner DeLay has declared for the Republican nomination for Attorney General. The office is open since Democrat Mike Bebee is running for Governor. DeLay is the only Republican candidate seeking this office so far, and it is late in the game for a state-wide office announcement.
My theory is that DeLay waited until he was sure what office Little Rock lawyer Chuck Banks would declare for before he announced. It was theorized by some, including this reporter, that Banks might try to run for AG himself. His ability to garner $1,000 contributions from the Little Rock legal community make him a formidable opponent.
It is now known that Banks will declare for Lt. Governor, jumping into the primary race against State Senator Jim Holt of Springdale.
Bank's website says he plans to declare Tuesday, October 4th at the following locations:
Little Rock
10:00 a.m.
On the banks of the river
Behind the Morgan Keegan Building
Bentonville
12:20 p.m.
Benton Co. Courthouse
BBQ Lunch to follow at Dave Peel Park
Blytheville
6:00 p.m.
Holiday Inn
And then we have the strange case of former Social Security Administration Head Bill Halter announcing for Governor against Mike Bebee. Halter is tied into the Clintons. My theory here is that this is an effort by the Clintons to tighten control of the Democratic Party in this state. I don't think Halter would do this without seeking out their advice and consent.
But what do you think about these issues?
i quess Matayo is not in the race anymore. if this site is to beleived
Mark, the Halter candidacy appears to be a continuation of the Ron Oliver-Jason Willett power struggle within the DPA. Oliver and Michael Cook seem pretty influential in the Halter and Jay Martin campaigns. I even hear Oliver is Halter's campaign manager and Cook is Jay Martins.
Many of Beebe's big donors are Clinton people. Also, General Wes Clark has endorsed Beebe, over Halter. This is just the extension of a feud that should have ended with the defeat of Oliver/Cook.
Your theory makes more sense than mine. Good report.

I spoke with Matayo only a few days ago and I understand he is in the race with no intention of getting out.
For what it's worth,
Lucas
I am voting for Suskie if he gets the Democratic nod.
Anybody but Banks!
