Inchoate Lack of Logic on Smoking Ban

Let me get this straight, Asa is running for Governor based on both Property Rights and continuing the programs of Governor Huckabee. Governor Huckabee is calling a special session where his pet legislation is ordering private property owners to forbid people from smoking on their property. What happened to private property rights? Isn't a business owner allowed to set policy for the use of legal substances on his own property? Hey, you don't like smoke at a restaurant, DON'T GO THERE!

It really is about freedom, and this bill sets a terrible precedent. Someone, anyone, please give me a principled defense of this bill in light of Asa's commitment to private property rights.

The neo-hippies in Fayetteville passed a city version of this same bill. Perhaps they think the issue is popular with the city folk?

I predict a short thread. This is a logically indefensible conflict. No one can reconcile the positions. Of course, the same two Holt haters could get on here again and start calling Holt and every person/organization that supports him "liars" like they have done on umpteen other threads- all anonomously and/or without documentation of course.

Has Asa mentioned this issue? I wonder if he would let this issue just "go away" were he elected. It would be funny to hear him blast away at this idea, though!

His Dem challengers may eventually force him to declare a position on this.

Can't you say the same thing about Sam's Club? If you don't like them selling alcohol, don't go there. Why do you have to run them out of town because you don't agree with them selling alcohol?

Who are the sponsors of the Huckabee smoking ban? All Democrats?

Holt is the people's candidate. He has the support of everyone, even the Democrats. Me and Holt share so many of the same ideas, I don't care what is actually "feasible", the point is that Holt is going to ram his way into government and change everyone's mind and get soooo much done.

Few members of Congress are willing to talk about the rules or their own smoking habits. But many feel that banning smoking would be caving in to political correctness.

If smoking as well as drinking are legal then why should they be regulated, especially since their seems to be a double standard. We have once again injected too much power to hipocrites in some instances. I dont support smoking but I sure dont think it should be legislated unless it is made illegal. But try that. Can you imagine Ted Kennedy having shakes at work. But then Illegal wouldnt apply to him.

3:21 : Now that is the kind of debate I envisioned for AW. It is a good question based on logically parallels, not a bunch of hacks calling everyone a "liar" and such.

You are basically saying should there be any state regulation on alcohol. It is kind of a different question than the SAMS club thing for this reason, there already is such regulation, so the question Holt has is should such laws apply equally to everyone or do the big companies get to finesse their way around laws that the mom and pop operations have to follow.

Given that laws exist, he took a principled stand that they should apply equally to everyone.

The second question, should such laws exist, is another issue. I would like to let our auidence weigh in with what they think, especially those like me who think liquor should be regulated but smoking should not be (even though I occaisionally have a class of wine but never smoke).

"Isn't a business owner allowed to set policy for the use of legal substances on his own property? Hey, you don't like smoke at a restaurant, DON'T GO THERE!"

So how is Huckabee's anti-smoking bill any different in principle from Asa's attack on payday lenders? Cannot businesses charge any legal rate of interest? If you don't want to pay it, don't borrow there.

Why is Asa's attack on payday lending rates different from Huckabee's bill telling businesses what wages they have to pay?

I'm having trouble identifying a consistent philosophy here, except supporting whatever Asa says and being against anything Governor Huckabee says.
