Rumors True: Social Security Available to Illegals

It's been one of those rumors that we keep hearing: "Wasn't there some kind of law passed expanding SS benefits to include illegal aliens who retire and return back to Mexico?" I myself recalled the hubbub when the topic initially came up. But, as with all controversies, the alarm has diminished (though the rumor persists). What became of the issue? Were we wrong? Unfortunately, no...

...It turns out that there was no "law" passed, but what is called a "totalization agreement" entered into by Presidents Bush and Vicente Fox. The agreement would allow Mexicans who have worked in the U.S. to return to Mexico and have their Social Security checks sent to them/deposited for them there. (the same would apply for Americans who work in Mexico).

The system is not yet in place, because the agreement has not been formally submitted to our congress yet. Once it has been submitted for review, it will become policy after 60 days should no action be taken.

Congressman Culberson (R-TX) has submitted an amendment to the FY2007 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Bill which would prohibit any tax payer money from being used to pay for the SS benefits of illegal aliens (of any country).

While such an amendment is a promising solution, I could imagine an easy workaround this law in two ways:

By those who argue that money paid into the system by illegal aliens is not the money of taxpayers in general, but that of the aliens'.

By a redefinition of illegal alien by a "comprehensive" immigration bill.

No matter how you slice it, this is a cancerous expansion of a socialistic government program. Not only was SS a bad idea for America, it's being made even worse by our government's attempt to make it a multinational federally (mis-)managed retirement program.
