Helena-West Helena Finances Amiss
There is just one example after another of financial shennanigans listed in this auditor's report for the city of Helena-West Helena. Read the first ten pages and see what I mean.
But do you think lefty hit man John Brummet will write a column deriding the city or the people it elects? I doubt it. He does not hesitate for a second however, to castigate Fort Smith, a city that is a model of decorum, proper financial practice, and general good government by comparison.
Of the two cities, which one most deserves to be mocked for the people it elects to office? The right answer might be "neither", but Brummett pours out the contempt for the one that most has its house in order.
Rep. Mark Martin's "Off the Marble" blog first alerted us to this story.

I couldn't find the item you mention on Mark Martin's blog, but Brummett's disparaging of FS is no mystery: they occasionally elect Republicans, e.g. Altes, Glidewell, Gunner Delay et al. People who do that, even occasionally, in Brummett's mind, don't deserve to breathe.
Yeah he just mentioned it as an aside so there was no sense linking to it.
Brummett has wasted his God-given talents.
"The General Fund financial records contained cash and receipt misstatements in the amounts of $3,186,183 and $4,549,762, respectively, due to posting errors, unrecorded certificates of deposit and interest earned, and misclassification of property taxes and state aid. These errors resulted in material adjustments to cash and receipts. The General Fund financial records contained
disbursement misstatements in the amount of $222,432, due to posting errors and unreconciled amounts."
Wonder if anyone will go to jail for this, or, will it all be swept under the rug like the abusers of the state retirement program caught earlier this year...
You just scratched the surface. Those errors could be simple incompetence. The report cited multiple instances of INAPPROPRIATE expenditures. Officials bought things they were not entitled to with public money.
A case like this is so egregious that these people WILL go to prison- unless of course they are Democrats.
I see that Brummett wrote a column about happenings in Helena and not a mention was made of anything in this audit.

The first time I ever met Brummett he popped out of a van sharing a cigarette with David Pryor. I was just a dumb, young small town radio reporter but I thought to myself "this guy is just a shill for Democrat politicians." Some things never change.
