Not Why We Sent Them: Republican Controlled Committee Forwards Proposal to Increase Fuel Taxes

Read it and weep, those of you who worked so hard to elected Republicans over Democrats. All we get to choose with this two party system is who gets to raise our taxes and put us in debt.

Since you did not publish the comment the first time I posted it I will once again. Do you not trust the people. Should the people not have the final say on this question? As polls show it will most likely fail so what are you scared of.

I did not delete your comment friend. You are welcome to join in a civil debate.

History has demonstrated that when the people don't vote the way the elites like, they get to "choose again" until the big boys get the answer that they want. This proposal is no different. The language would allow the Governor to call a special election up to every six months! It is not for a one-time election.

I agree with Thomas Jefferson when he said that when the people are well informed, they can be safely entrusted with their own government. The dominant media in this state does not inform them well. Instead, they beat the drums for these things every time one comes down the pike. It's been that way for 15 years at least.

Add to that this: they will charge us 3/4 million dollars for a special election instead of waiting until a general election for the express purpose of giving special interests who will profit off of this a disproportionate influence on the outcome.

You make a very valid point about the Governor being able to call a special election up to every six months. I will admit upfront here that I lean toward supporting a tax for highways. I dislike taxes as much as the next guy but I drive across the state two times a week, we need major highway work. I have not made up my mind as of yet. It does sound as though the bill is written in a poor fashion. I simply think that some in this debate sound as though they do not trust the people and need to make their argument better as you have done in your response.
