Did Beebe Steal the Credit from Female Legislators?
Rep. Donna Hutchinson and Rep. Lori Benedict may have been victims of a theft.
Pay no attention to the fact that the solution that THEY supposedly discovered, looks exactly like that proposed in HB 1004 filed some days before by Rep. Donna Hutchinson and Rep. Lori Benedict. An inquiry to Rep. Benedict revealed that, yes, these two ladies went to Rep. Pierce in an effort to try to get him to co-sponsor the bill. They were both Republicans and they felt like if they brought a Democrat on board it would help with the bill's passage.
From there, Pierce appears to have gone to Gov. Beebe, which would not be bad in itself if all he is trying to do is to get the Governor to go along with the bill. What is sorry is that Beebe decides that rather than share the credit with the female GOP legislators he will go straight to the Democrat-Gazette and announce that he and Pierce have got the solution. The result? The Governor and Pierce wind up on the front page and, along with Robert Moore, getting all the credit for the solution. The two Republican ladies who did all the work get no credit for it.

Share the credit? The men deserve NO credit. They should have given all the credit to the ones who came up with the idea. Of course, that's if they WERE men. And if they possessed a gram of integrity. And if they weren't power hungry hogs. You get my drift...
Rep. Hutchinson emailed me. She does not hold Rep. Pierce to blame for what happened. She thinks he was just trying to get money for the firefighters back the same as she and Benedict were doing. She is more generous than I am unless and until he finds a public forum and admits that Beebe told it wrong to the papers and that Hutchinson and Benedict were the ones who first proposed the solution.
She also shared her priorities with me on this issue. #1. This was a executive branch problem and the funds to re-hire the firefighters, pay the loan and any penalties should come from the executive branch. The legislative branch was kept out of the loop.
We did not appropriate the funds to be used in that manner. The Forestry Commission gave us inaccurate financial reports. When they had an opportunity in October 2010 to tell us about the problem, the decision was made to keep us in the dark. I thought it was wrong for them to run to the legislative branch and demand we give them money.
